U.S. Financing of Mozambique LNG Project Raises Concerns
Dec, 7 2025
The British and Dutch governments recently withdrew their financial support for TotalEnergies' liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project in Mozambique, citing increasing violence in the area. In contrast, the U.S. Export-Import Bank awarded $4.7 billion in funding to the same project in March. This decision has raised concerns about the potential risks associated with investing in a region marked by political instability. Notably, the Mozambique government previously sought assistance from the Wagner Group, a Russian private military company, to enhance security in the region. The situation underscores the complexities of international energy investments, particularly in areas facing significant humanitarian and social challenges.
