U.S. Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino has indicated that the agency will maintain a presence in Chicago for an extended period. In a post on X, he stated, "Don’t call it a comeback; we’re gonna be here for years," referencing the agency's commitment to operations in the city. This statement has drawn criticism from former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who described Bovino's actions as unconstitutional and shameful, asserting that he will soon face a "day of reckoning" for his agency's operations.

Bovino's comments included a declaration of intent to assist Chicago in addressing issues related to undocumented immigrants, which he referred to as "criminal illegal aliens." He emphasized the agency's role in serving the community, despite facing threats against their personnel. Current Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has expressed support for a campaign to rename a city snow plow with the phrase "Abolish ICE," reflecting a growing sentiment among some local leaders against aggressive immigration enforcement practices.

In response to Johnson's endorsement, Bovino suggested an alternative name for the snow plow, indicating a dismissive attitude towards the mayor's stance. Johnson countered by reminding Bovino that the naming decision would ultimately be made by Chicago residents, who may not support the federal agency's continued presence in their city.
