Trump Proposes Land Concessions in Ukraine Peace Talks
Dec, 29 2025
During a press conference, Trump stated, "I’d have no problem with doing it," when asked about traveling to Ukraine. He noted that while he would prefer to finalize a deal without such a visit, he had offered to engage with the Ukrainian parliament regarding potential territorial concessions, particularly concerning the contested Donbas region.
Trump claimed that the U.S. and Ukraine were largely aligned on Zelensky’s proposed 20-point peace plan, although he acknowledged that certain contentious issues, such as the status of Donbas, would be challenging to resolve. He suggested that some land currently under Russian control might be negotiable, urging for a resolution before further territorial changes could occur.
Zelensky, however, reiterated that he does not possess the authority to unilaterally concede land, emphasizing that any decision would require parliamentary approval or a national referendum. He stressed the importance of the land to the Ukrainian people, stating, "It’s their land... the land of our nation for a lot of generations."
Russian President Vladimir Putin has consistently demanded that Ukraine relinquish control of the Donbas region, despite ongoing military challenges in securing that territory. Zelensky's revised peace plan, which is a streamlined version of a previous U.S. proposal, includes provisions for security guarantees from the U.S., NATO, and European allies to deter future Russian aggression, as well as reaffirmation of Ukraine's sovereignty.
Zelensky highlighted the acquisition of security guarantees as a critical step toward achieving lasting peace, noting that significant agreements had been reached on various aspects of the peace framework. Trump expressed optimism about the potential for a deal, although he refrained from providing a specific timeline for its realization.
In the context of ongoing violence, Zelensky remarked on Ukraine's commitment to ending the war, despite recent escalations in Russian attacks, which included numerous drone strikes and missile launches. He underscored the necessity of strength in negotiations to secure peace.
Trump also mentioned a prior conversation with Putin, describing it as productive, but did not disclose specific details. He indicated plans for further discussions with European leaders to advance peace talks. The meeting included several high-ranking officials from the U.S. administration, reflecting the significant geopolitical implications of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
