The South Carolina Department of Public Health (SCDPH) has reported that the latest cases of measles are associated with a previously identified exposure at a school. The outbreak in the Upstate region has now reached a total of 156 cases, contributing to a statewide total of 159 cases. Currently, there are 252 individuals in quarantine and three in isolation, with the latest end date for quarantine set for January 15.
Health officials indicate that a person infected with measles is contagious from four days prior to the appearance of the rash until four days after its onset. It is noted that individuals with mild symptoms can transmit the virus before being aware of their infection. The SCDPH emphasizes that vaccination remains the most effective method for preventing measles and controlling the outbreak.
