Minnesota's Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan wore a hijab during a local television appearance to demonstrate solidarity with the Somali community in Minneapolis. This event took place amid ongoing federal and congressional investigations into allegations of fraud within organizations serving the community, which reportedly defrauded taxpayers of up to $9 billion.

Flanagan emphasized the importance of the Somali community in Minnesota, stating, "I am incredibly clear that the Somali community is part of the fabric of the state of Minnesota." She encouraged support for local Somali businesses and acknowledged the fears present in the community during this challenging time.

In response, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer criticized Flanagan's actions as a publicity stunt. The investigations are being conducted by the U.S. Treasury Department and a House committee, focusing on Somali-linked organizations accused of misappropriating a significant portion of the $18 billion in federal funding allocated to Minnesota since 2018.

Federal prosecutor Joe Thompson described the situation as involving "staggering, industrial-scale fraud," with the largest scheme resulting in the conviction of numerous individuals associated with the nonprofit Feeding Our Future, who misused over $250 million for personal luxuries, including real estate and luxury vehicles.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz remarked on the systemic issues within the funding programs, stating, "The programs are set up to improve people’s lives, and in many cases, the criminals find the loopholes." This statement followed criticism from employees of the Minnesota Department of Human Services, who held the governor accountable for the fraud.

The House Oversight Committee has requested documentation from Walz and other state officials as part of their investigation into the fraud. Flanagan's appearance at Karmel Mall included a gesture of friendship towards Nimco Ahmed, a Somali-American state director, who has previously been associated with individuals linked to the al-Shabaab terrorist group. Ahmed has expressed the dual challenges faced by the Somali community, including the stigma of terrorism and the impact of fraud on their welfare.

Flanagan's public appearances have previously sparked controversy, including wearing a shirt advocating for transgender rights. Following a recent violent incident at a Catholic school in Minneapolis, she expressed condolences and support for the affected community, highlighting the ongoing challenges related to violence and community safety.
