The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have announced the disruption of a significant terrorist plot aimed at Los Angeles on New Year's Eve, allegedly orchestrated by members of the Turtle Island Liberation Front. This group has been characterized by authorities as having pro-Palestinian, anti-government, and anti-capitalist ideologies.

Attorney General Pam Bondi reported that four individuals were arrested in Lucerne Valley, California, where they were allegedly preparing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) for the planned attacks. Each suspect faces charges of conspiracy and possession of a destructive device. A fifth individual, connected to the same network, was apprehended in New Orleans for planning a separate attack.

The Turtle Island Liberation Front promotes the liberation of territories referred to as Turtle Island, a term used by some Indigenous peoples to denote North America. The group has expressed its views through social media, advocating for the rights of colonized peoples and calling for solidarity with various liberation movements, including those in Palestine, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.

According to the criminal complaint, the suspects had obtained bomb-making materials and conducted tests on explosive devices in a remote area of the Mojave Desert. FBI agents intervened before the assembly of a functional explosive device could be completed. The investigation revealed that the suspects had discussed precautions to avoid civilian casualties, indicating a troubling awareness of the potential impact of their actions.

The operation involved both an FBI informant and an undercover agent, and the suspects had reportedly outlined their plans in a document titled 'OPERATION MIDNIGHT SUN,' which detailed intentions to plant explosives at multiple locations targeting U.S. companies engaged in interstate and foreign commerce.

Bondi commended the efforts of federal prosecutors and investigators in preventing the alleged plot, framing the operation as a demonstration of effective counterterrorism measures.
