Colin Allred Withdraws from Senate Race to Pursue Congressional Campaign
Dec, 8 2025
Allred articulated his belief that a divisive primary would hinder the party's effectiveness in addressing threats to communities and constitutional values posed by Donald Trump and other Republican figures. He stated, "I've come to believe that a bruising Senate Democratic primary and runoff would prevent the Democratic Party from going into this critical election unified against the danger posed to our communities and our Constitution by Donald Trump and one of his Republican bootlickers."
In his new congressional bid, Allred will compete in a district that has undergone significant changes, currently represented by Marc Veasey. He is expected to face a primary challenge from Representative Julie Johnson, who is also adjusting her district. Allred criticized the redistricting process, describing the 33rd district as having been racially gerrymandered by Trump to further distort democratic representation. He noted his personal connection to the community, having grown up there and witnessed economic struggles firsthand.
The recent Supreme Court ruling upheld a congressional map established by the Republican-controlled Texas legislature, resulting in the creation of five additional Republican-leaning districts. Allred previously served in the House after flipping a Republican seat in 2018 but lost to Senator Ted Cruz in the last election by eight points, a race characterized by high costs.
Following Allred's exit from the Senate race, Representative Jasmine Crockett is anticipated to announce her candidacy. Crockett, recognized for her progressive views and active social media presence, has gained attention within the Democratic Party, although her past controversial comparisons between Donald Trump and Adolf Hitler have sparked debate. The Texas Senate race is expected to be competitive, featuring a three-way primary among Republican incumbents and challengers.
