Thailand Conducts Airstrikes on Cambodia Amidst Escalating Tensions
Dec, 7 2025
Both Thailand and Cambodia have accused each other of initiating strikes along their shared border. The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) stated that the airstrikes were aimed at military targets, including weapon depots and command centers, which were deemed direct threats. The RTAF justified the action as a response to an earlier attack that resulted in the death of a Thai soldier.
In contrast, Cambodia's Ministry of National Defense refuted the RTAF's claims, labeling them as “false information.” The Cambodian government emphasized its commitment to resolving conflicts peacefully and adhering to international law, asserting that it had not retaliated during the recent assaults.
The Cambodian army, however, accused Thai forces of provoking the situation, stating that the Thai military had engaged in numerous provocative actions prior to the airstrikes.
In response to the escalating conflict, approximately 70% of Thai civilians in border towns have been evacuated, with one civilian death reported during the evacuation process due to a pre-existing medical condition.
The recent hostilities follow a brief border conflict in July that resulted in significant casualties and displacement. An initial ceasefire was established on July 28 after diplomatic discussions involving Trump, and a subsequent expanded ceasefire was signed in late October. However, the agreement has faced challenges, with Thailand halting progress on the ceasefire following a landmine explosion that injured several soldiers.
The ongoing military actions and the breakdown of diplomatic efforts highlight the fragility of peace in the region, raising questions about the implications for civilian safety and regional stability.
